For a savvy Internet marketer, the Internet holds an amazing potential to make money. On late-night infomercials you hear about people making money while they sleep, without having to lift a finger. In fact, this isn’t such a far-off claim when you know how to use the Internet to your advantage. Establishing an online empire takes time, patience and know-how. Here are a few tips for how to start off making money advertising on websites online.

Instructions

  1. Sign up for affiliate programs with companies that have products you have tried, or that you believe will sell well and be of value to the general community. You can also set up your own website advertising your own products and services to make money.
  2. Sign up for a Google AdWords account; it only takes a few moments. Once you are signed into your new Google AdWords account, start reading the tutorials regarding keyword choices and how to optimize your AdWords advertising dollars. With AdWords you will be advertising on other websites for a fee.
  3. Load money onto your Google AdWords account and set your daily spending limit. For example, if you only want to spend $150 a month on your AdWords advertisements, you would set your daily limit to $5. Everytime someone clicks on your AdWords ad, you will be charged a per-click rate. The amount of money that you spend on each ad click depends on the demand for the keyword. A highly competitive keyword will cost much more. Be sure to pick keywords that 1) are highly targeted for your product, 2) are not as competitive as the obvious general keywords for your type of product, and 3) get decent traffic. This will help you get more value for your money. You want quality hits, not just a high quantity of hits.
  4. Choose keywords that would go best with the product or service you will be advertising on your website (or affiliate link). For example, if you are selling a book about classic cars, your keywords should be search terms that auto aficionados and classic car buyers will likely use when going to a search engine (i.e. classic 1960s cars).
  5. Create an ad (it can be a text or image ad) with your affiliate link or the link to your website built in. When people click your Google Adwords link they will be sent to your website. If they purchase something, you will make money off of the sale and be paid either through the parent company for your affiliate program, through your credit card merchant account, or through Paypal (usually a preferred payment center for online sales–see below to learn more about Paypal).

Building an eCommerce web site, or eCommerce store, can be both challenging and exciting. Some of the challenges you may face as you build your eCommerce Web Site may be, what item should you sell?, how much should you charge?, how do I build the web site in the first place? There are so many ways to build an eCommerce web site that it would be impossible for me to cover all of them. I’ll talk about how to build one using pre-built software. You’ll find it interesting, I hope, and come to the conclusion that its not as hard as it may appear. Also, I have more information in the resources section below.

Instructions

  1. The first thing you have to do to build your eCommerce store is to get yourself a hosting site, if you don’t already have one. If you don’t know where to start on this please look at my resources below and check out some of the sites I have listed. You’ll find web hosting sites there. I have another article that talks more in depth on this so I won’t go deep into it here. (See Resources below).

If you don’t want to buy a hosting package or pay for a site you can use one of the free sites like Squidoo or create a blogging site through Google. These are both free and you can promote your eCommerce product all you want on either.

  2. Get yourself a good eCommerce software package, if you don’t already know how to program your site. The reason I recommend pre-built software is because all the hard parts to building a web site are done for you. All you have to do is configure it and make it live. Everything from there should run automatically. The particular software I chose to talk about here is Build a Niche Store software(listed in Resources) that will build your eBay store. All you have to do is buy it, which will run you under $100 (one time for any number of sites), figure out how to configure it and make it live on your site. The really great thing about this software is that I’ve implemented it on a number of sites and found the tech support to be the best.

There are lots of other eCommerce software packages out there, so if you look around you will find something fairly quickly. Just make sure you ask all your questions before you buy. A good test of how good the people are is how well and how quickly they answer pre-sales questions.
For this particular eCommerce software package I had to sign up for the eBay Partner Network program. So, if you decide to go with this package you will need to do that, as well. If you know how to program your site yourself and still want to build an eBay store you will still have to sign up for the eBay partner network program.
I’m obviously talking about selling as an eBay affiliate here, but you don’t have to do it this way.
There’s so many other ideas out there I’m afraid to mention too many here because I don’t want to confuse you. I’ll mention just a few more.
Another eCommerce store you could build would be one that sells a niche market pointing to things on Amazon. Once again you would have to sign up for their affiliate program.
There are a lot of sites out there that are built to be an adsense site, a site that doesn’t sell anything. (Go to Google.com for adsense info) This is a site that just has a lot of content built around a niche market, with 1 or 2 adsense ads strategically placed so that people who are interested in the topic will click on the ads that interest them.

If you decide you want to build your eCommerce web site yourself, without purchasing software, read *The About.com guide to Web Design* by Jennifer Kyrnin. Its full of great ideas on how to build your web site. I borrowed it from the library.

  3. Decide what you will sell. If you just have no idea on what you can sell go to Clickbank (In Resources below) and do a search on something that interests you. Make sure you sign up so you can sell all the stuff that they have for sale. Looking up keywords on your topic can help you decide as well. Look up keywords using the Google keywords Search (in Resources below). This is an invaluable tool when trying to figure out what good keywords to use on your eCommerce web site. If nothing else this tool can at least give you ideas on what your content will be about.
  4. Design your web site. If you use the pre-built software this is a lot easier to do. Usually there are defined templates for an eCommerce web site that you can use. If you’re doing it on your own you probably already have some good ideas on how it will look. There are a lot of resources available for web design and eCommerce sites. Don’t ever think that you can’t do it, because if you don’t know something its easy to find an answer somewhere. I found the library to be a great source for books on how to build web sites. This is a great resource because it doesn’t cost anything to use. Google is a great place to search for things as well.
  5. If you have a money making idea for your eCommerce web site you may want to get it going and be willing to pay for it. You may want to look at a full service Web Hosting site. There are a number of sites out there that have all the tools and will help you out in doing everything. I’ve listed one, SiteBuildit, in the resources.
Good luck building your eCommerce Web Site!

Tips & Warnings

  • If you aren’t a web programmer, get some good software to build your sites with. Make sure you don’t have to license it, but only buy it and use it over and over to build your sites.
  • Have an idea for a niche market.
  • Write some good content using good key words. Use the google tool listen in the resources.
  • Read
  • The About.com guide to Web Design
  • , bu Jennifer Kyrnin. It’s full of great stuff to building your web site yourself.
  • Don’t copy! Its too easy to come up with new and great ideas, there’s no reason to copy anyone else.
